This program provides legal aid information to the community with an emphasis on the local leaders within their zones/villages because they are the first respondents. Girls and women receive free legal advice in regards to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence.

Statement of purpose

Within our communities, we have legally elected grassroots leaders in different capacities including Local Council 1, Local Council 2, the Women’s League, and the Youth League. These leaders have a constitutional mandate to serve their constituents derived from the Local Government Act. They are the first administrative unit in the national governance structure handling cases in their communities. Orientation and support that is necessary to equip the leaders with information, resources as well as the capacity to handle the different cases is what this program aims to do. There are many cases involving domestic violence, Land matters, family disputes, child abuse, theft, among others have been mishandled leading to increased suffering. This brings forth the Micro Legal Literacy Initiative to sensitize, create key informants, facilitate them with basic street law as well as strengthening their leadership.

Goal

Within 3 years, to empower local leaders at the community level with basic street law knowledge, practical skills on navigating civil and criminal cases with the judicial system and referral agencies.

Objectives

• To provide community leaders with basic information on legal issues.
• To facilitate basic counseling and conciliation sessions at local council levels in the different communities.
• To identify and address the challenges faced by local leaders
. To act as liaisons between the local community and key departments in the judicial system
